KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The study aimed to analyze the impact of ERAS-based pelvic floor exercises on urinary symptoms post-radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.
  • The study concluded that ERAS-based pelvic exercises alleviate urinary symptoms, enhance urination, and boost QoL post-radical hysterectomy.

Guijuan Liu and the team aimed to assess how ERAS-based pelvic floor exercises affect post-radical hysterectomy urinary symptoms.

The retrospective study utilized clinical data from patients admitted to the hospital between January 2021 and December 2022 who were undergoing radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Patients were categorized into the routine group (receiving conventional care) and the ERAS pelvic floor exercise group. ERAS-based exercises were administered to the latter group, building upon the former’s care protocol. Propensity score matching balanced confounders between groups. Post-matching, urination scores, pelvic floor muscle strength, lower urinary tract symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) were compared.

About 180 patients were part of the study, with 60 identified post-propensity scores matching evenly split between ERAS and routine groups. Baseline characteristics were balanced between the groups, with no statistically significant differences (P> 0.05). Compared to the routine group, the observation group exhibited notably shorter first spontaneous urination time, higher first urination volume (P< 0.05), enhanced pelvic floor muscle strength, significantly reduced urinary tract symptoms, and improved QoL at discharge and 3 months post-discharge (P< 0.05).

The study concluded that pelvic floor function exercises, aligned with the ERAS concept, alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms, expedite urination, and enhance pelvic floor muscle strength and quality of life following radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.
