On Feb 6, 2023, two consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes 7·8 and 7·5 occurred along the East Anatolian Fault and devastated southern Türkiye and northern Syria—a region inhabited by almost 20 million people. Numerous cities, towns, and villages were severely damaged; thousands of buildings collapsed; at least 50 000 people are thought to have died; and more than 100 000 people have been injured. Severe aftershocks have continued to affect the region and as of March 7th, bodies belonging to thousands of people remain under the rubble.
