Worldwide, countries are steadily making progress to protect their populations from the harms of tobacco, according to the ninth WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic. Launched on July 31, 2023, the publication reports that 5·6 billion people are now covered by at least one best practice policy in tobacco control, five times more people than in 2007. Smoke-free spaces are given special focus in the report. WHO notes that in 2022, 2·1 billion people were protected by smoke-free indoor public places, workplaces, and public transport, equating to a seven times increase since 2007.
