When artist Andrew Crummy was recovering from chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat tonsil cancer at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, UK, in 2017, he was contacted by Rod Mountain, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, UK. Mountain knew that Crummy was the designer behind the Great Tapestry of Scotland—a 160-panel community arts project that tells the story of the nation’s history—and was introduced to him by his oncologist, Ioanna Nixon, now Clinical Director of Specialist Oncology Services at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow, UK.
