[Comment] Cancer and premature mortality—pushing the frontiers of cancer care

In 2015, the UN shared a blueprint of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the related targets to promote a sustainable future and boost healthy life worldwide. A reduction in premature deaths by a third from non-communicable diseases, including cancers, was earmarked as a crucial SDG target to be reached by 2030. Although some gains have been made in increasing life expectancy for cancers (eg, lung, breast, cervical, prostate, and blood cancers) in the past 40 years, there remains a pronounced gap in cancer prevention, treatment, remission, or cure.
